Under the oversight of the CFO, Paul Ellinger, the Office of Investments oversees the investment of the University System’s Operating and Long-Term Investment Pool assets, including farmland donated to the University.
Operating and Long-Term Investment Pool assets are invested through carefully selected external investment firms, while farmland is primarily managed internally by the Agricultural Property Services department.
$202.9M was distributed to System Units in FY24.

The investment objective for the Long-Term Investment Pool is to preserve the purchasing power of pool assets and provide annual support for an infinite period.
The investment objective for the Operating Pool is to preserve the value of the principal, maintain liquidity appropriate to the forecasted working capital requirements of the System, provide prudent diversification and maximize the rate of return on investment.

Sr. Director of Investments
Ms. Melchiorre has 15 years of investment and banking experience. She joined the University System’s investment team in 2012. Previously, Ms. Melchiorre spent four years at Northern Trust Asset Management focusing on operational and investment risk management and two years at Protiviti Consulting with a focus on the banking industry. She graduated from the University of Illinois with a bachelor’s degree in finance and speech communication. Ms. Melchiorre is a CFA Charterholder.
